“In 3422, humanity survived underground as Earth’s atmosphere
dwindled. Cartographer Elara discovered a multi-hued light from the
“inert” Moon. This was Earth’s second chance: the Moon, having
absorbed cosmic energy from the stars, was healing the atmosphere.
A vibrant rainbow arched across the sky, coaxing people to a
revitalized surface where the Sun felt warmer and stars shimmered,
heralding a new beginning.”
1
The year is 3422. Earth, once a
vibrant blue marble, was now a dusty,
parched sphere, its atmosphere thinned by
centuries of neglect. Humanity had
retreated to sprawling underground cities,
powered by geothermal energy, their lives
a monochrome existence devoid of the natural world. Above
ground, only the Automated Orbital Atmospheric Regulators
(AOARs) whirred tirelessly, a futile effort to reclaim what was
lost.
Elara, a young stellar cartographer, found solace in the
simulated skies of her observation dome, a
vast chamber within the central research
sector of Neo-Gampaha, a city burrowed
deep beneath what was once Sri Lanka’s
Western Province.
She
charted
ancient
constellations,
memorizing the positions of stars long since
dimmed by Earth’s atmospheric haze. Her particular
fascination lay with the Sun, a distant, fierce orb that provided
only a fraction of the warmth it once had, and the Moon, a
ghostly companion that inspired more dread than wonder in the
hearts of her people.
Legends spoke of a time when the Moon controlled tides, when
its silvery glow illuminated vibrant nights. Now, it was just a
pockmarked rock, a stark reminder of what they’d sacrificed.

The Anomaly
One cycle, as the simulated Sun dipped
below the holographic horizon, an anomaly
flickered across Elara’s screen.
Not a star, nor a known satellite, but a
pulsating, multi-hued light source, unlike
anything she’d ever seen. It danced in the
upper atmosphere, a vibrant splash of color against the
perpetual twilight. Her heart quickened.
“Impossible,”
She whispered, leaning closer.
“This isn’t a drone.”
She cross-referenced the coordinates with the AOAR network.
The AOARs were reporting unusual atmospheric fluctuations,
not detrimental, but profoundly unusual.
It was as if the air itself was shimmering, reacting to this new
celestial visitor. Dr. Aris, Elara’s stern and practical supervisor,
shuffled into the dome, his brow furrowed.
“What is it, Elara? Another phantom reading?”
he grumbled; his eyes fixed on the routine readouts.
“No, Dr. Aris! Look at this,”
Elara exclaimed, pointing to the vibrant display.
“It’s real. A light source. Pulsating. And… multi-hued.”
Dr. Aris squinted.

3
“Likely a rogue space debris reflecting residual solar radiation.
Nothing to be alarmed about.”
“But the colors, sir! They’re too pure, too deliberate. And the
atmospheric readings are… reacting.”
Elara insisted, her voice trembling with excitement.
“It’s like… like the sky is breathing again.”
A Bridge of Light
Over the next few days, the phenomenon intensified. The multi
hued light grew, resolving into an arc of impossible brilliance.
It stretched across the simulated sky, a majestic rainbow
painted not by rain, but by something far grander. Panic rippled
through the underground cities.
Was it an alien invasion? A dying sun’s last gasp? The Elders,
keepers of ancient knowledge, spoke of forgotten tales, of a
time when such arcs graced the sky after life-giving rain.
“The prophecies spoke of such a sign,”
Elder Rhea murmured during a council
meeting; her ancient eyes fixed on the
dome’s display. Her voice, usually calm
and measured, held a tremor of ancient
hope.
“A bridge of light, when all hope seemed lost. The Solar Arc,
they called it.”
Driven by an insatiable curiosity, Elara petitioned for an
atmospheric drone deployment. Dr. Aris, swayed by the
4
unprecedented readings and the growing unrest, reluctantly
agreed.
“Alright, Elara. But if this is just a malfunctioning AOAR,
you’ll be on sanitation duty for the next cycle,”
He warned, though a flicker of curiosity was evident in his eyes.
Elara programmed the drone’s optical sensors to focus on the
rainbow, its spectral analysis.
What it found defied every known scientific principle. The light
wasn’t a reflection; it was being generated. And its source…
was the Moon.
The Moon’s Secret
When the data came in, Elara’s breath hitched.
“Dr. Aris, you won’t believe this. The source… it’s the Moon.”
Dr. Aris nearly dropped his data pad.
“The Moon? Impossible! It’s inert! We’ve scanned it for
centuries!”
“Not anymore,”
Elara said, her voice filled with wonder.
“It’s emitting this energy. Look at the
spectral analysis. It’s resonating with our
depleted atmosphere. It’s like it’s…
remembering.”
The revelation sent shockwaves through
the scientific community. The Moon, long thought inert, was
5
emitting this extraordinary energy. Further analysis revealed a
faint, pulsating signal emanating from its surface, a pattern that
seemed to resonate with the very fabric of Earth’s depleted
atmosphere.
Elara theorized that the Moon, in its silent orbit, had been
absorbing the residual energy of the ancient stars, the dying
echoes of their light and the lost vibrancy of Earth’s
atmosphere. Now, with a critical mass reached, it was returning
that energy, not as a destructive force, but as a healing balm.
“It’s a cosmic battery,”
Elara mused aloud to Dr. Aris later, as they watched the live
drone feed of the magnificent lunar-generated rainbow.
“Drawing in the scattered energies, the faint cosmic radiation,
the whispers of the stars that made it through our broken sky.
And now, it’s giving it back.”
Reclaiming the Surface
The rainbow grew, becoming a permanent fixture in the sky, a
bridge of pure light connecting Earth and Moon. And then,
something even more miraculous began to happen. The thinned
atmosphere, exposed to this unique lunar-generated spectrum,
began to thicken.
Microscopic organisms, dormant for centuries in the soil, began
to stir. The air, once acrid, started to carry the faintest whisper
of a sweet, earthy scent.
6
Slowly, hesitantly, the people of the underground cities began
to emerge. They shielded their eyes from the unfamiliar
brilliance of the rainbow, but their faces were etched not with
fear, but with awe.
The first tentative steps onto the re
emerging surface, near the ancient,
now-dusty ruins of what was once the
Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, were
filled with a mix of trepidation and
undeniable hope.

in the sky.
“Look, Mother!” a child exclaimed, pointing skyward, his
voice echoing in the vast, open space.
“It’s like the pictures in the ancient books! The ones from
before the Great Haze!”
The Sun, still distant, felt a little warmer. The Moon, no longer
a symbol of loss, had become a beacon of hope, its multi-hued
arc a promise of renewal.
The Stars, once viewed only through simulations, now
twinkled faintly through the gradually clearing skies, their
ancient light serving as a guide for a humanity re-learning to
look up.
Elara, standing on the re-emerging surface, her boots crunching
on newly damp soil, felt a tear trace a path down her cheek, not
of sadness, but of profound gratitude.

emotion.
Lush, green vegetation slowly returning
to a previously barren landscape, with
the rainbow visible in the background.
“We did it, Dr. Aris,”
She whispered, her voice choked with
Dr. Aris, standing beside her, a rare smile gracing his lips,
simply nodded.
“No, Elara. They did.”
He gestured towards the Moon and the distant shimmer of the
stars.
“They remembered us. And now, we must remember them.”
He paused, taking a deep, shuddering breath of the increasingly
fresh air.
“The future, it seems, is no longer just underground.”
A futuristic city built on the reclaimed
surface, with a prominent park or green
space, and the rainbow still visible in the
sky.
